One of the hardest parts about composing is writing for instruments that you are unfamiliar with. While this is usually a daunting task, we are helping to lessen that barrier.

Breaking the Silence is a multifaceted project that is all about demonstrating what instruments are capable of for young composers. Search through our resources and find a new mute option for Trombone, a new extended technique for the Trumpet or a new bowing for Viola. While the website is currently limited to mostly Brass, we hope to expand beyond into Woodwinds, Percussion and the rest of the String family.

This resource was used by Bowral-based composer Elliot Lee in order for him to create a brand new film score for Buster Keaton’s ‘The General’ using only instruments and techniques featured on Breaking the Silence.
