The straight mute is the default mute for all brass players. If “mute” is written on a part but a specific one is not specified, it will be played on a straight mute.
Straight mutes come in several types, the standard is metal (usually aluminium) but many players will also have access to a fibre straight mute.
Rarely players will have a wooden straight mute that creates another slightly different colour.
